In today’s post, we’ll look at the question posed in the title: why do teeth become discolored in the first place?

There’s no single reason. Instead, teeth discoloration is the result of several combined factors, including:

Foods

Beverages (coffees, teas, sodas, and wines)

Aging

Medications (tetracycline)

Excessive fluoride use

Genetics

One way to avoid stains is to cut back on, or even avoid, foods that are known to contribute to them. In cases where discoloration may be genetic, though, avoiding specific foods or drinks may not help. The same can also be said of brushing and flossing. While brushing and flossing are great for your oral health, they aren’t guaranteed to make your smile whiter.

Which is why, if you’ve dreamed of having a whiter smile, we recommend scheduling an appointment with our Medford office. During just a short appointment with Dr. Giamberardino, we can examine your smile and recommend a treatment that will be able to help you. In some cases, it may not be in-office or at-home teeth whitening. In other cases, it may be that a different cosmetic dentistry option would be better, like porcelain veneers or cosmetic bonding.

Get started on your smile makeover today. Call Giamberardino Dental Care to schedule your appointment. We serve patients from Medford, Winchester, Somerville, Malden, Everett, and surrounding areas.

Is your upcoming visit to Giamberardino Dental Care also your first? If so, we’d like to let you know what you can expect.

First, we want you to feel welcome. Our team will do that by spending some time getting to know you and making sure you’re absolutely comfortable. Simply feeling welcome can do a lot to dispel any anxiety a first visit may stir up.

Once you’re seated comfortably in our dental chair, and you’ve had a chance to get to know Dr. Giamberardino, we’ll begin your oral exam. During your exam, we’ll take a close look at your teeth, gums, head, neck, jaw, and bite to see how everything looks. We’ll also take X-rays so we can get a better look at how your smile’s doing. If we need to, we can also take images of your teeth and gums with our intraoral camera. With advanced tools like these, it’s much easier for Dr. Giamberardino to educate patients about their smiles.

After your exam, you can expect us to complete a professional cleaning. Why is a professional cleaning so important? Because as great as your daily brushing and flossing routine might be, it takes a professional cleaning to really get teeth at their cleanest. A professional cleaning also gives our hygienist a chance to check your gums for signs of gum disease and offer valuable oral health tips.

Do You Still Have Questions About Your First Visit?

If you still have questions about what you can expect from a first visit, give Giamberardino Dental Care a call today. We’d be happy to talk with you about your appointment. And if you haven’t yet, be sure to complete our new patient form before coming to see us.

From all of us at Giamberardino Dental Care, we look forward to meeting you!

But as we mentioned in our last post, your oral and overall health are deeply connected. And with February being so well known for Valentine’s Day, we thought now would be a good time to reiterate that connection.

Gum disease starts with bacteria and plaque building up around the teeth and gums, causing your soft tissue to become irritate and inflamed. As this inflammation and irritation continue, pockets can develop in the gum tissue. These pockets give bacteria and plaque access to the heart via the bloodstream.

Once in the heart, further irritation will cause protective plaque to build up around the arterial walls, eventually blocking the flow of blood. It’s this lack of blood flow that could someday trigger a heart attack. All of which is why regular visits to Dr. Giamberardino’s Medford dental office are essential.

Would You Like To Learn More About The Oral Health-Heart Health Connect?

To learn more about the connection between the heart and your smile, schedule a consultation visit with Dr. Giamberardino at our Medford dental office. We’re committed to helping patients from Medford, Winchester, Somerville, Malden, and Everett lead healthy lives and have healthy smiles.

The reality, however, is there is much more overlap between them than most may realize.

Specifically, what connect these two separate spheres are bacteria and gum disease. When gum disease isn’t treated, pockets can form between a patient’s teeth and gums. These pockets give bacteria an entrance to the body’s bloodstream and, subsequently, the rest of the body, potentially contributing to a variety of health problems that includes:

Heart disease

Premature birth or low birth weight

Diabetes complications

Alzheimer’s disease

Stroke

Osteoporosis

But you can protect your smile and your overall health by following these steps (indentified by the Mayo Clinic).

The first, and most obvious, is to brush twice a day and floss at least once. Rinsing with mouthwash is optional but provides that much more protection for teeth and gums.

It’s also a good idea to visit Giamberardino Dental Care twice a year—every six months—for regular cleanings and checkups with Dr. Giamberardino.

We also advise patients to change their toothbrush every few months as bacteria can build up on a toothbrush’s bristles over time.

If you have any questions about the connection between oral and overall health, call Giamberardino Dental Care to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Giamberardino and our team. We serve patients from Medford, Winchester, Somerville, Malden, Everett, and surrounding areas.

All of them are effective, but not every patient needs to restore his or her smile with a full denture. For some patients, all that’s needed is a partial denture. But like full dentures, partial dentures come in more than one variety.

The first kind of is held in place by clasps or brackets and can easily be removed for cleaning. The second kind is anchored by dental implants.

As with full implant-supported dentures, partial dentures supported by implants can provide patients with greater functionality and a natural bite. What makes this possible is the natural bond that forms between the patient’s dental implants and jawbone. Because dental implants are made from biocompatible titanium, they’re able to act as prosthetic roots, promoting the growth of new tissue in the process.

If you live in Medford, Winchester, Somerville, Malden, Everett, or a nearby community and would like to know for sure that you’re a candidate for dental implants, call our Medford dental office to schedule a consultation visit with Dr. Giamberardino.

Dental implants aren’t right for every patient, but for many they can provide the stability and functionality that’s been missing. Call us today with your questions or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Giamberardino.

For one thing, patients who are missing one or more teeth might feel self-conscious about smiling. For another, patients with missing teeth may have trouble enunciating or chewing foods that are important for supporting good nutrition.

But with dental implants from Dr. Giamberardino’s Medford dental office, it’s possible for patients to have a complete smile once again. Whether you just need to restore a single tooth or an entire row, dental implants can help.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are made of biocompatible titanium, which means that, over time, your implant (or implants) will bond with your jawbone, promoting the growth of new bone tissue. Without your implant(s), your jawbone would actually weaken, setting the stage of further tooth loss down the road. Because dental implants stimulate the growth of new bone tissue, though, your jawbone will stay strong and healthy, increasing the life of your natural teeth and providing you with a complete smile that feels just as natural as it looks.

Want to Find Out More?

If you have questions about how dental implants can help you restore your smile, call our Medford dental office today to schedule a complimentary consultation visit with Dr. Giamberardino. We happily serve patients from Winchester, Somerville, Malden, Everett, and surrounding areas.
